photo

Films at the Gate comes to an end early this year. We will not be on the Greenway this weekend in Chinatown Park due to the approaching storm. Thank you to everyone who transformed a vacant lot into a cinema on Thursday and Friday. Keep dry. Stay safe. See you next year.

Films at the Gate’s Jean Lukitsh introduces us to the Fung family, many of whom have played a role in films we’ve shown over the years and this season as well. Thanks Jean! Books and culture in Boston’s Chinatown, new effort underway

cc_300014

We concluded the Storefront Library over a year ago in Chinatown, and tonight I’m excited to share photos of something new underway which I believe has tremendous potential to carry the torch forward in the neighborhood. Terrific people are getting behind a new, energetic effort to create a space for Chinatown that can offer books, [...]

A reflection on Work In Progress from Jody Weber, Artistic Director, Weber Dance

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Below is note from Jody Weber, reprinted with her permission, in which she reflects on our three weeks together on Work In Progress. Boston Street Lab couldn’t have asked for a better performing arts partner, and we learned so much from Jody and her company about how dance is rehearsed and what dancers need to [...]

Work In Progress: the home stretch

wip homestr4

Below is an updated schedule from Weber Dance for the final weekend of Work In Progress (open rehearsals in vacant storefronts) in Fort Point Channel. Tonight, we’ll also be featuring Jared Green, writer, who will be working live in the space. This weekend is Fort Point Channel Open Studios Weekend—things are happening all over the [...]

Work In Progress: a writer at work.

J_WIP2

On Sunday, after the dancers left for the day, we shut the doors to the Work In Progress space to work a new experiment. Over the next four hours, we created an installation that broadens Work In Progress in a remarkable way: we’re now able to show a writer at work, his words projected nearly [...]

Work In Progress: Ask the Dancers

WIP_ask

We’ve been experimenting with ways to connect the performing artists and the audience, while minimizing interruptions and disturbances. Here’s something we borrowed from our previous project, the Storefront Library, which included a question box for library patrons to drop a question for a volunteer librarian named Astrid. She would do her best to answer the [...]

Work In Progress: When does the real show start?

sign_300

During this morning’s open rehearsal, a man with a dog leaned against the mezzanine railing and watched a choreographer lead seven dancers through a new routine. On the way out, he asked, very politely, “when does the real show start?” Work In Progress is essentially about two things. The first is activation of underutilized space. [...]

Work In Progress: Weber Dance and Jon Turk settle in

wip4

Weber Dance had a good, long rehearsal today. The space is functioning well, and the public is starting to drop in and watch. Jon Turk, author and collaborator on the dance piece took the stage and did some dramatic storytelling. Chris Engles was on the floor, capturing video for Weber Dance that we’ll link to [...]

Work In Progress launches tomorrow

midway_600

Tomorrow, we’ll take this raw space and transform it into a rehearsal studio for seven dancers, a scientist, and a poet. And the public. Thank you to the staff at Midway Studios and the residents living above, who have already dropped by to say hello. Thank you to Weber Dance, Boston Dance Alliance, and Hallkeen [...]

Work In Progress: meet the floor

wip

When we compared music, theater and dance rehearsals for the launch of Work In Progress, dance was far and away the most challenging activity to produce in a vacant storefront. But we also thought dance would have the most impact. The solution: a custom-designed, modular, portable dance floor rented from the Boston Dance Alliance.   [...]

Artist Courtney Moy contributes watercolor artwork and poster for Work In Progress

Moy_Dancers_single

We’re excited to be working again with local artist Courtney Moy. Last year, she generously donated her time to create artwork for our project Films at the Gate (movie theater in a vacant lot). Now, she’s created artwork for Work In Progress—all on her own time, after working long hours by day. Thank you Courtney. [...]

Work In Progress: meet the space

wipstorefront_600

Preparations are underway for the launch of Work In Progress (open rehearsals in vacant storefronts), and we’ll be reporting about it here on the blog. Our first location in Fort Point Channel, Boston is a somewhat atypical vacant storefront situation—it has limited views from the street but is extraordinarily large at 20,000 square feet. Either [...]
