Friday’s film GALLANTS is an affectionate indie comedy about finding the soul of old Hong Kong in the modern day. It was a surprise hit in Hong Kong last year, and, in the following post, our curator Jean Lukitsh takes you behind the scenes to meet the talent: The young filmmakers behind GALLANTS, the surprise kung [...]

We are ready to go, and it’s always a pleasure to work with such great people to bring Chinese-language films to the community. Iris went the extra [...]

Films at the Gate’s Jean Lukitsh introduces us to the Fung family, many of whom have played a role in films we’ve shown over the years and this season as well. Thanks Jean! From Hong Kong to Hollywood, show business tends to be a family affair. Once an actor or director finds success, doors open [...]

Films at the Gate 2011 is just around the corner, and Street Lab is looking for production volunteers! Here’s a post that just went up at www.filmsatthegate.org seeking volunteers to work alongside Volunteer Producer Sam Davol and other community members on the lot: Street Lab, Inc, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is seeking voluntees to help us transform [...]

Our 30-day fundraising drive for the Uni launched this morning on Kickstarter. We’re asking people to help us create a portable, open-air reading room for New York City launching this fall. Join us by: pledging on Kickstarter (pay only if we reach our goal on August 15) following us on Twitter: @findtheuni liking us on [...]
We’re just a few days away from launching a fundraising drive to build the Uni, a portable reading room for public space. We’d like to offer a preview of the Uni to those of you following the blog here at Boston Street Lab. Below are new links—feedback always appreciated. In a few days from now, we’ll [...]

We concluded the Storefront Library over a year ago in Chinatown, and tonight I’m excited to share photos of something new underway which I believe has tremendous potential to carry the torch forward in the neighborhood. Terrific people are getting behind a new, energetic effort to create a space for Chinatown that can offer books, [...]

Below is note from Jody Weber, reprinted with her permission, in which she reflects on our three weeks together on Work In Progress. Boston Street Lab couldn’t have asked for a better performing arts partner, and we learned so much from Jody and her company about how dance is rehearsed and what dancers need to [...]

Below is an updated schedule from Weber Dance for the final weekend of Work In Progress (open rehearsals in vacant storefronts) in Fort Point Channel. Tonight, we’ll also be featuring Jared Green, writer, who will be working live in the space. This weekend is Fort Point Channel Open Studios Weekend—things are happening all over the [...]

We’ve been experimenting with ways to connect the performing artists and the audience, while minimizing interruptions and disturbances. Here’s something we borrowed from our previous project, the Storefront Library, which included a question box for library patrons to drop a question for a volunteer librarian named Astrid. She would do her best to answer the [...]

During this morning’s open rehearsal, a man with a dog leaned against the mezzanine railing and watched a choreographer lead seven dancers through a new routine. On the way out, he asked, very politely, “when does the real show start?” Work In Progress is essentially about two things. The first is activation of underutilized space. [...]

Chelsea Gunn is one of five volunteer UNI librarians working with Boston Street Lab on the UNI, which is our project to create a portable, outdoor reading room for cities. As part of that work, Chelsea attended the Beyond Book Conference on the future of Libraries and Journalism at MIT. In the weeks ahead, we’ll [...]

Weber Dance had a good, long rehearsal today. The space is functioning well, and the public is starting to drop in and watch. Jon Turk, author and collaborator on the dance piece took the stage and did some dramatic storytelling. Chris Engles was on the floor, capturing video for Weber Dance that we’ll link to [...]

Weber Dance has taken the stage at Work In Progress. Join us during the next three weeks and watch them rehearse. Schedule here. Today was a long and fulfilling day for Boston Street Lab. Watch our own progress in the photo/video slideshow below. Thanks to Boston Street Lab’s Maggie Husak, who helped assemble the floor [...]

Tomorrow, we’ll take this raw space and transform it into a rehearsal studio for seven dancers, a scientist, and a poet. And the public. Thank you to the staff at Midway Studios and the residents living above, who have already dropped by to say hello. Thank you to Weber Dance, Boston Dance Alliance, and Hallkeen [...]

When we compared music, theater and dance rehearsals for the launch of Work In Progress, dance was far and away the most challenging activity to produce in a vacant storefront. But we also thought dance would have the most impact. The solution: a custom-designed, modular, portable dance floor rented from the Boston Dance Alliance. [...]

We’re excited to be working again with local artist Courtney Moy. Last year, she generously donated her time to create artwork for our project Films at the Gate (movie theater in a vacant lot). Now, she’s created artwork for Work In Progress—all on her own time, after working long hours by day. Thank you Courtney. [...]

Preparations are underway for the launch of Work In Progress (open rehearsals in vacant storefronts), and we’ll be reporting about it here on the blog. Our first location in Fort Point Channel, Boston is a somewhat atypical vacant storefront situation—it has limited views from the street but is extraordinarily large at 20,000 square feet. Either [...]

We’re excited to announce the launch of Work In Progress, April 22 – May 8. Here’s the concept: performing arts rehearsals in vacant storefronts. It’s our take on Art Windows. Thank you to our space partner HallKeen Real Estate and our performing arts partner Weber Dance. Thanks also to Boston Street Lab’s own Maggie Husak [...]
