Films at the Gate began as a simple idea five years ago. It’s still simple: join us this week to watch films together, outdoors, for free, in a vacant lot in downtown Boston. Help us make the most of urban space.

Boston Street Lab advises Fenway CDC

Inspired by Films at the Gate, the Fenway Community Development Corporation held their own free, outdoor, movie screenings for the Fenway community, borrowing a vacant parking lot from The Abbey Group for the occasion. “Starlight Movie Nights” were held Aug 6 and 7, and each evening included performances of spoken word.

Boston Street Lab provided production and programming advice. Check out photos from the Fenway event here.

Hiring Storefront Library Site Manager

Boston Street Lab is now accepting applications for Site Manager of the Storefront Library in Boston’s Chinatown. Two shifts need to be filled (morning and afternoon), and the Site Manager(s) will receive a stipend of $12/hour.

The Site Manager will be supervised by Boston Street Lab and will be responsible for day-to-day operation of the Storefront Library during its period of operation (October 1 through December 31, 2009) with the support of interns and volunteers. We are seeking a remarkable person with outstanding communication skills who can take command of any situation on the ground, and help the community make the most of the Storefront Library’s inaugural run.

An temporary, experimental park in Manhattan.

An editorial in the New York Times gives a nod to the concept of testing large-scale (expensive) urban plans with temporary (inexpensive) installations. In regards to lawn chairs set out in Times Square during the recent pilot closure of midtown streets, the Times noted:

Actually, these particular chairs are temporary. Purchased for $10.74 each at a local hardware store, many of the original 350 are already starting to sag and show signs of overuse. But before anybody invests in more durable or attractive seats, the city’s traffic experts want to make sure the idea works. Even the joys of a large sitting area in Times Square are not an adequate trade-off for permanent gridlock.

If traffic is merely bad, as usual, the next step is to make the area a little more glamorous. By August, the seating areas are scheduled to be resurfaced. There are plans for sturdier chairs and planters are expected to replace the orange plastic barrels now being used to warn cars away.

Times Square’s experimental park is primitive, but for anyone who loves the lights of Broadway, it is the new best view in town.

Visit storefrontlibrary.org to learn more about our latest project, the Chinatown Storefront Library. The Storefront Library will transform one of Boston’s vacant street-level spaces into a temporary public library, featuring readings, talks, screenings, and events. Coming Fall 2009.
